Pectra Update: A New Momentum for Ethereum?
After long delays, the deployment of the Pectra update is scheduled for May 7, 2025. It has been highly anticipated by developers and validators. A look back at its content, its tumultuous history, and its likely impact.
A Technical Update
Pectra aims to address several technical needs and prepare for significant future developments. The 4 main objectives of this update are:
1. Allow user accounts to send more complex and secure transactions (EIP-7702).
2. Improve the experience for validators in multiple ways
3. Add functions for developers
4. Allow more flexibility for scalability
Pectra is essentially a streamlining and transition update. It fills gaps left by previous hard forks (Shanghai, Dencun) while preparing the infrastructure for future ambitions (unification of rollups, generalized account abstraction, efficient staking). The impact of the update should therefore be relatively limited for Ethereum users, unless EIP 7702 meets with great success.
