On May 7, 2025, at 17:05 Beijing time, the Ethereum mainnet successfully activated the Pectra upgrade at epoch 364032, marking the most significant network upgrade since the Merge in 2022.

🔧 Highlights of the Pectra Upgrade

This upgrade includes 11 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), focusing on the following three major areas:

• User Experience (UX):

Through EIP-7702, regular accounts can temporarily behave like smart contracts, enabling transactions without ETH, personalized signature verification, and other functionalities.

• Staking Mechanism:

EIP-7251 increases the staking limit from 32 ETH to 2048 ETH, making large validators more efficient and attracting institutional participation.

• Layer 2 Scalability:

EIP-7691 increases the number of blobs supported per block, effectively reducing transaction fees on Layer 2 and enhancing overall scalability.

🧪 Testnet Phase

The Pectra upgrade underwent rigorous testing on testnets such as Holesky, Sepolia, and Hoodi. Although there were initial configuration issues with some validators, it ultimately ran stably on the Hoodi testnet in March, laying the groundwork for mainnet deployment.

📈 Market Impact

Analysts expect the Pectra upgrade to bring the following positive effects:

• Increase the demand for $ETH ETH, as it enhances the usability and interaction experience of Dapps.

• Reduce the circulating supply of ETH, as the participation of large stakers may increase the total amount staked.

• Promote the development of the Layer 2 ecosystem, optimize the fee structure, and increase throughput.
