#TradeStories: From Side Hustle to Sustainable Brand

In 2019, I started selling handmade soy candles from my tiny apartment kitchen. What began as a side hustle to earn a little extra cash quickly turned into something bigger—much bigger. I had no background in business, just a love for crafting and a strong belief in sustainable living.

Every evening after work, I’d pour candles, design labels, and pack boxes. My weekends were spent at local markets, often under the hot sun, pitching my creations to strangers. The turning point came during a holiday fair when a boutique owner placed a bulk order. That one deal gave me the confidence—and the funds—to scale up.

I reinvested every dollar into better supplies and branding. I built a basic website, started a small Instagram account, and relied heavily on word of mouth. Sales grew slowly but steadily. By 2022, I took the leap: I quit my 9-to-5 and committed to my business full-time.

There were setbacks. Shipments delayed, supplies out of stock, and once, an entire batch ruined due to a bad batch of wax. But with each challenge, I learned something valuable. I built partnerships with local suppliers, hired help during busy seasons, and started giving workshops in my community.

Now, my brand is stocked in over 30 stores nationwide, and I’ve expanded into body care products. The journey hasn’t been easy—but it’s been worth every risk.

To anyone thinking of turning their passion into a trade: start small, stay consistent, and listen to your customers. Every successful business has humble beginnings.
