The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has unleashed a wave of criticism from the Catholic world after posting an image of himself -generated by artificial intelligence- in which he is seen dressed as the Pope.

The image, which was shared by the official social media accounts of the White House, is published as Catholics mourn the death of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, and prepare to choose the next pontiff.

The Catholic Conference of the State of New York accused Trump of mocking the faith.

The post comes days after he joked with reporters saying, "I would like to be Pope."
