Since 2024-2025, China has greatly accelerated its efforts in the field of nuclear fusion, particularly through the construction of a giant research center in Mianyang, Sichuan province. This center is based on inertial confinement fusion, using very high-power lasers, similar to the principle of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) in the United States.
Satellite images and observer reports indeed indicate that this complex exceeds the size of the NIF by about 50%, which is huge. The project aims at both energy research and strategic applications (since mastery of fusion is also linked to military advancements, such as thermonuclear weapons).
