#TariffsPause Yes, a temporary moratorium on American tariffs has been announced. On April 9, 2025, American President Donald Trump announced a 90-day moratorium on most new tariffs imposed by his administration, while maintaining a base rate of 10% for most countries. China is excluded from this moratorium, where tariffs on its imports have been raised to 125%, amid increasing trade tensions between the two countries.
This moratorium does not include Canada and Mexico, which are subject to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), nor countries like Russia and North Korea. Additionally, certain goods, such as automobiles, steel, and aluminum, remain subject to tariffs of up to 25%.
The aim of this moratorium is to provide an opportunity to negotiate with the countries involved, with Trump indicating that more than 75 countries have expressed their desire to negotiate new trade agreements. However, Trump has recently stated that he does not see the need to extend this moratorium after the expiration of the 90-day period, signaling that the United States plans to conclude new agreements.
It is worth noting that this decision has sparked internal controversy, with 12 American states filing lawsuits against the Trump administration, accusing it of overstepping its authority by imposing these tariffs without Congressional approval.
