Japan has launched its inaugural megawatt-class tidal turbine, the AR1100, in the Naru Strait. Developed by Proteus Marine Renewables, this 1.1 MW powerhouse harnesses consistent ocean currents to deliver clean energy to the Goto Islands.

The AR1100 is both powerful and intelligent, featuring blades that automatically adjust to optimize performance, seamless grid integration, and continuous, emission-free operation underwater. Proteus, with prior success in the UK, is now demonstrating the viability of tidal energy in Japan.

As tidal technology gains momentum in countries like Scotland, France, and the U.S., this milestone strengthens Japan’s position in the global push for advanced renewable energy solutions.
