$TRUMP Donald Trump is the 45th president (2017–21) and 47th president (2025– ) of the United States. He is the second U.S. president to serve nonconsecutive terms. Prior to his 2016 run for the presidency, Trump was best known as a real-estate developer and businessman who owned, managed, or licensed his name to commercial and residential properties around the world. From 2004 to 2015 he also starred in the reality television series "The Apprentice," which featured contestants competing in various challenges to become one of his employees. Trump was the Republican Party’s candidate for president in 2016, and his campaign slogan “Make America Great Again” helped him to defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton. During his first term Trump sought to change tax regulations and limit immigration, among other actions, and he was responsible for the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic beginning in early 2020.The U.S. House of Representatives impeached Trump on charges connected to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by his supporters after his loss to Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election. Trump was acquitted by the U.S. Senate. He was indicted in 2023 on four separate sets of criminal charges; he denied all wrongdoing. In 2024 he was convicted on multiple felony counts of falsifying business records. In 2024 Trump was again the Republican candidate for president, and he defeated Democrat Kamala Harris. After he took office in January 2025, he pursued trade policy, downsizing the federal government, and the elimination of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs as top priorities.
