The financial market faces, this Thursday (24), a period marked by uncertainties, intensified by persistent trade and geopolitical tensions.

In this regard, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently warned of an increase in risks to financial stability, pointing to sharp volatility in asset prices and the situation of highly leveraged financial institutions.

High-impact geopolitical events, such as Sino-American trade tensions, have been catalysts for significant declines in major stock markets around the world.

Immediate Impact on Global Markets

The S&P 500 index, one of the main barometers of the U.S. stock market, recorded a significant drop of 3.5% in just one day.

Moreover, global losses, in terms of market value, have surpassed the $5 trillion mark since the announcement of new tariffs by then U.S. President Donald Trump.

The effective average tariff of the United States on exports from China reached 125%, according to confirmation from the Trump administration in April 2025. This increase includes an additional 20% tariff, implemented between February and March 2025, as part of actions aimed at combating fentanyl trafficking.

In turn, the average tariffs in China on American products have also risen to 125%, in effect since April 12, 2025, according to an official announcement from the Chinese Ministry of Finance.

Perspectives and the Current Scenario

The U.S. Treasury bond market also did not escape the turmoil, experiencing a sharp sell-off that resulted in increased financing costs for 10-year bonds.

At the same time, the U.S. dollar recorded one of its worst daily performances since 2022, a direct reflection of the increasing search for assets considered safer amid the prevailing climate of uncertainty in international financial markets.

Despite some signs of recovery, such as the increase in bond prices after a brief pause in tariff imposition, volatility remains a prominent feature of the global financial landscape.

Investors around the world are keeping a close eye on political and economic developments, looking for signs that could indicate a clearer direction for the markets. However, the persistent global uncertainty poses a significant challenge to maintaining financial stability in the coming months.
