Russia Advances $50 Billion-Cubic-Meter Gas Pipeline to China Amid Western Sanctions

Amid escalating Western sanctions and a shifting geopolitical landscape, Russia is accelerating its pivot to Eastern energy markets through the development of a major new gas pipeline project with China. The project, known as Soyuz Vostok or Power of Siberia 2, is designed to transport up to 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually via a 598-mile route that traverses Mongolia.

This strategic initiative represents a significant expansion of Russia’s energy partnership with China, building on the long-term agreement signed in 2014, which facilitated the construction of the original Power of Siberia pipeline—operational since 2019.

The new pipeline will feature 1.42-meter-wide pipes and five major compressor stations, underscoring the scale and ambition of the project.
