#NorthKoreaHackers North Korean Operatives Create Fake U.S. Companies to Target Cryptocurrency Developers North Korean cyber operators registered two shell companies in the U.S. — Blocknovas LLC and Softglide LLC — using fake identities and addresses to bypass Treasury sanctions and target cryptocurrency developers with malware. According to cybersecurity firm Silent Push, the hackers are linked to a subgroup of the Lazarus Group, North Korea’s elite cyber unit under Pyongyang’s Reconnaissance General Bureau. The investigation also identified a third entity — Angeloper Agency — whose registration status remains unclear. "This is a rare case of North Korean hackers creating legitimate structures in the U.S. to attack unsuspecting job seekers," said Casey Best, Director of Threat Intelligence at Silent Push. The FBI confirmed that Blocknovas’s domain was used for posting fake job offers and spreading malware, emphasizing that these operations pose one of the most sophisticated persistent threats to the U.S. Hackers lured victims with fake job interviews to deploy malware and steal cryptocurrency wallets and credentials. North Korea continues to use cyberattacks to fund its economy and missile programs. The regime has also been linked to the massive Bybit hack, resulting in losses of approximately $1.5 billion. #scamriskwarning UN Says Crime Syndicates Expanding Into Crypto and Blockchain To Power Multibillion-Dollar Operations The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is warning that organized crime syndicates are increasingly leveraging cryptocurrency and blockchain technology to fuel their operations. According to a new UNODC report, gangs in Southeast Asia are creating tailored financial ecosystems, including unlicensed exchanges and stablecoins, to evade detection and launder illicit money. “…Many of the region’s largest criminal groups that have expanded within Southeast Asia and a growing number of jurisdictions in other parts of the world have rapidly diversified their business lines towards the development of key infrastructure. This has extended far beyond the construction and management of physical scam centers to include online gambling platforms and software services, unlicensed payment processors and cryptocurrency exchanges, encrypted communications platforms and, most recently, stablecoins, four blockchain networks, and illicit online marketplaces, often controlled by the same criminal networks.“ The UN also calls for international cooperation and stronger regulatory frameworks to combat and stem the growth of such groups. “The subtle and ongoing spillover creeping into other regions has allowed Asian crime syndicates to broaden the scope of their operations and target an increasingly diverse range of victim profiles and nationalities from around the world. More than this, it has allowed them to dramatically scale up profits and influence while simultaneously generating billions in illicit capital reserves (fiat and cryptocurrency) that can be reinvested into further expansion and also utilized to service the money laundering needs of other criminal groups globally.” More interesting news — subscribe

#ETFs XRP, Solana, DOGE and Others Among 72 Different ETF Applications Waiting for SEC Approval: Report Crypto firms are now waiting to hear back on 72 active applications for new crypto-related exchange-traded funds (ETFs). James Seyffart, an ETF analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, compiled the list of submissions to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). ETFs awaiting approval include funds tied to Solana (SOL), XRP (XRP), Sui (SUI), Litecoin (LTC), Axelar (AXL) Hedera (HBAR), BNB, Cardano (ADA), Avalanche (AVAX), Dogecoin (DOGE), Polkadot (DOT), Aptos (APT), Chainlink (LINK), Pudgy Penguins (PENGU), Official Trump (TRUMP), Melania (MELANIA) and Bonk (BONK). Other potential new ETFs are tied to a basket of currencies, and a few are based on Bitcoin (BTC) and/or Ethereum (ETH), assets that have already been approved for inclusion in other spot ETFs. Eric Balchunas, a senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, predicts that BTC ETFs will remain dominant regardless of the number of altcoin funds that are approved. “No Second Best? Bitcoin ETFs command 90% of all the crypto fund assets globally. While a TON of alt/meme coin ETFs are likely going to hit market this year, they will only make a minor dent, Bitcoin likely to retain at least 80-85% share long-term.” The SEC greenlit the first spot market Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024, bringing in billions of dollars worth of inflows to the top digital asset by market cap, and the regulator subsequently approved Ethereum ETFs for trading last July.
