On April 23, 2025, a significant earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck Istanbul, Turkey. The epicenter was located in the Sea of Marmara, approximately 40 kilometers southwest of the city, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The tremor occurred at 12:49 PM local time, causing widespread panic among residents. While no fatalities were reported, over 150 individuals sustained injuries, primarily due to falls or jumping from buildings in fear.  

The earthquake was felt across neighboring provinces, including Kocaeli, Sakarya, and even as far as Izmir. Several aftershocks followed, with one measuring 5.3 in magnitude. In Istanbul’s historic Fatih district, an abandoned building collapsed, though no casualties were reported. Authorities have urged residents to stay away from damaged structures and remain vigilant.
