U.S. Slaps Huge Tariffs on Southeast Asian Solar Panels
In a major trade move, the U.S. has hit solar panel imports from Southeast Asia with massive tariffs—some exceeding 3,500%.
Why the crackdown?
Officials allege that producers in Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia are flooding the market with underpriced, subsidized panels—a practice known as "dumping."
Here’s the tariff breakdown:
Cambodia: 3,521%
Vietnam: 395.9%
Thailand: 375.2%
Malaysia: 34.4%
Winners:
American solar manufacturers like First Solar and Hanwha Q Cells get a boost.
Losers:
U.S. renewable energy developers face higher prices and fresh supply chain headaches.
Looking ahead:
To dodge tariffs, some firms are already eyeing new manufacturing hubs like Indonesia, Laos, and Oman. A final decision from the U.S. International Trade Commission is due next month.
