The Associated Press cites a senior U.S. official as saying that the meeting held in Rome on Saturday (April 19) made "very good progress" and confirmed that follow-up negotiations will take place next week. The U.S. has not yet formally issued a statement on the meeting.

According to a senior Iranian diplomat, a delegation led by Araqchi held four hours of indirect talks with U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Biegun (a billionaire real estate executive, who has been repeatedly tasked with diplomatic missions by President Trump) at the Omani Embassy in Italy.

Iranian officials stated that the two delegations were in different rooms of the embassy, with Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi responsible for relaying messages.

The semi-official Tasnim news agency quoted Araqchi as saying: "We have reached a better understanding on certain principles and goals. The negotiations were conducted in a constructive atmosphere and made progress."

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei stated on social media: "Today, Iran and the United States held beneficial indirect talks under the auspices of the Omani Foreign Minister, with a positive atmosphere. Both sides agreed to continue technical-level indirect discussions in the coming days, followed by a new round of higher-level negotiations..."
