The President of the United States appointed Jerome Powell to lead the institution during his first term in 2018, but now he accuses him of politicizing the U.S. central bank.

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, is considering whether to remove the Federal Reserve Chairman, Jerome Powell, indicated the White House's top economic advisor this Friday (04.18.2025).

"The President and his team will continue to study the matter," said the director of the National Economic Council, Kevin Hassett, when asked about the possibility of removing Powell, a day after Trump lashed out at the head of the central bank.

Powell has been under the President's scrutiny for several days due to his refusal to lower interest rates. "I am not happy with him. I let him know, and if I want him to go, he will leave very quickly, believe me," he said on Thursday.

The Republican does not have the power to directly dismiss the heads of the Federal Reserve. To remove Powell from his position, he would have to initiate a lengthy process and prove that he committed a serious offense.

The Federal Reserve Chairman warned on Wednesday that the effects of the tariffs imposed by Trump "will almost certainly lead to at least a temporary increase in inflation."
