White House economist Kevin Hassett said on Friday that US President Donald Trump and members of the House of Representatives are considering the removal of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. Asked at the White House whether removing Jerome Powell was an option, Hassett said, "The president and his team will continue to study these matters." Hassett's remarks came a day after the president escalated his opposition to Powell, accusing him of acting "politically" and failing to cut interest rates. He also accused him of being too quick to dismiss Powell. Earlier, he told Powell that the law "doesn't allow him to be removed," and that if he is unable to act collectively if asked to do so, he can continue his duties until his term ends in May 2026.
