Iran, US to Resume Critical Nuclear Talks in Rome

TEHRAN: Iran and the United States are scheduled to restart high-level negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear programme this Saturday in Rome, following what both parties described as a “constructive” initial round last week.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff will engage in the Oman-brokered discussions, marking a continuation of indirect talks that began in Muscat.

Last week’s meeting was the highest-level contact between the two adversaries since former US President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal in 2018.

Western nations, including the US, have long accused Iran of attempting to develop nuclear weapons — a charge Tehran denies, maintaining its nuclear ambitions are purely for peaceful, civilian purposes.

Diplomatic relations between Tehran and Washington have remained severed since the aftermath of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.
