What Is the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH)? The efficient market hypothesis (EMH), alternatively known as the efficient market theory, is a hypothesis that states that share prices reflect all available information and consistent alpha generation is impossible According to the EMH, stocks always trade at their fair value on exchanges, making it impossible for investors to purchase undervalued stocks or sell stocks for inflated prices. 1 Therefore, it should be impossible to outperform the overall market through expert stock selection or market timing. The only way an investor can obtain higher returns is by purchasing riskier investments.

Le terme marché désigne le lieu où se confrontent un groupe d’offreurs et de demandeurs qui cherchent à effectuer des transactions portant sur un bien ou un service particulier. Il résulte de cette confrontation un prix, appelé le prix du marché. En théorie, il existe plusieurs types de marchés : Lorsqu’un marché est caractérisé par un nombre important d’agents économiques (vendeurs et acheteurs), de sorte qu’aucun agent ne peut individuellement par ses décisions influencer les comportements des autres et le prix du marché, il s’agit d’un marché de concurrence pure et parfaite. Lorsqu’on a sur un marché un seul vendeur d’une part et un grand nombre d’acheteurs d’autre part, on parle du marché de monopole. Alors, si on a un seul acheteur et plusieurs vendeurs, le marché est un monopsone. Lorsqu’un marché est caractérisé par un petit groupe de vendeurs et un grand nombre d’acheteurs, on parle du marché d’oligopole (mais, s’il n’y a que deux vendeurs sur le marché, dans ce cas on parlera, de duopole). L’oligopsone est la situation dans laquelle le nombre d’acheteurs est négligeable tandis que celui des vendeurs est important. Lorsque sur un marché, les entreprises en concurrence vendent des biens identiques mais légèrement différenciés les uns des autres, on parle alors d’un marché en concurrence monopolistique. Le prix du marché est déterminé par la confrontation de l’offre et de la demande. Mais, le marché est à l’équilibre lorsque l’offre du marché est égale à la demande exprimée sur le marché
