The European Commission (EC) is exploring legal ways to terminate long-term contracts for the supply of Russian gas without paying penalties. This is reported by the Financial Times (FT) citing sources.
According to them, in this regard, the EC is examining the relevant contracts to determine whether the companies that signed them have the ability to declare force majeure and terminate relations with Russian gas suppliers. In Brussels, they hope to avoid the need to pay penalties to Russian companies.
"If the whole idea is not to pay Russia, then [the payment of compensation] will undermine the entire process," said a source from the publication in the EU.
