Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao stated that the continuous imposition of tariffs by the U.S. will cause significant harm to the developing world and could even trigger a humanitarian crisis.
Mr. Wang told Ms. Ngozi Okonjo, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, during a video call on April 11 that China's 'drastic countermeasures' are to protect the legitimate rights and interests of the country while maintaining fairness and justice in the international community.
Mr. Wang was quoted in a statement from the Ministry of Commerce on April 12 that WTO members should unite to fight against unilateralism, protectionism, and bullying through open cooperation and multilateralism.
He stated that developing countries face some of the greatest risks from U.S. tariffs.
Mr. Wang also had a video call with Mr. Geraldo Alckmin, Minister of Development, Industry, Foreign Trade and Services of Brazil.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, both sides exchanged views on issues such as strengthening economic and trade cooperation between China and Brazil and responding to tariffs imposed by the U.S.
