The second most popular cryptocurrency falls more than 40% so far this year, hit by particular problems that go beyond the wave of sales that has hit digital assets.

The start of the year is proving difficult for cryptocurrencies in the markets. Most virtual currencies are far from their all-time highs, impacted by the geopolitical and trade uncertainty centered in the United States. This is compounded by fear-driven sales stemming from the loss of value of major tech companies, whose investors are closely tied to cryptocurrencies.

However, even within the declines, there are winners and losers, with ethereum positioned particularly negatively. The second most popular cryptocurrency loses more than 40% of its value in this first quarter of the year, a true collapse that adds idiosyncratic causes to the widespread trend that has caused $150 billion in the market capitalization of the virtual currency to evaporate.
