On March 28, 2025, a powerful earthquake struck Myanmar, causing significant damage and casualties across various regions. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale, was centered near Sagaing and was followed by aftershocks measuring 6.4 in magnitude.
The tremors were felt in major cities including Yangon, Mandalay, Naypyidaw, Sagaing, Aungban, Bago, Kale, Magway, Kyaukse, Muse, and Yinmabin. In Mandalay, several high-rise buildings and parts of the historic palace walls collapsed. A bridge connecting Mandalay and Sagaing also suffered damage.
In Yangon, the earthquake caused structural damage to residential buildings, particularly in the Thaketa Township, where some houses collapsed. An individual sustained injuries due to a motorcycle accident during the tremors. Additionally, phone lines and electricity were disrupted in several areas, including Bago, where residents reported communication and power outages.
Authorities have declared a state of emergency in six regions, including Sagaing, Mandalay, Naypyidaw, and Magway. Emergency response teams are conducting search and rescue operations, and efforts are underway to restore communication and power services. The full extent of the damage and the number of casualties are still being assessed.
Given Myanmar's location along active seismic fault lines, earthquakes of this magnitude have been anticipated by seismologists. Historical records indicate that a similar earthquake occurred in 1839, and experts had projected the possibility of another significant quake within a 190 to 200-year timeframe.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant for potential aftershocks and to follow guidance from local authorities regarding safety measures and evacuation procedures.
