Bilqis was a woman of extraordinary intelligence, profound wisdom, and courage that a thousand men could not match, so much so that she was said to be the daughter of the jinn! She was a great queen who ruled the Kingdom of Saba in Yemen, famous for the great dam of Ma'rib that held back vast quantities of water behind it.
One day, a witch came seeking the jinn to know hidden matters that humans cannot perceive, and she said to the king:
"Indeed, the Ma'rib Dam will collapse!"
The king was amazed and said to her:
"If you tell the truth, I will grant you gifts and everything you ask for, and if you lie, I will cut your head off your body!"
The king sent engineers to investigate the matter, and they came with certainty: the dam will indeed collapse! At that point, the king decided to flee with his wealth, his children and his entourage to a safe place without informing his people of the catastrophe that awaited them, leaving them to their inevitable fate!
But his daughter Bilqis refused to flee with him, and was astonished at her father's behavior in abandoning his people. After his departure, she warned the people of the impending disaster and offered them a plan of salvation, saying:
"Take your possessions, your wealth, your children, and everything you can carry, and move to the high places on the mountains!"
He warned them not to delay, and remained with them until the end. The dam did indeed collapse and swept away everything in its path, but thanks to the wisdom and courage of Bilqis, the people were saved.
After she saved her people, the people loved her and made her queen, and they obeyed her blindly. But she ruled a people who worshipped the sun instead of Allah.
When the cuckoo learned this, he informed God's Prophet Solomon, peace be upon him, who ordered the cuckoo to deliver a message to Bilqis. The queen was astonished when she found the message beginning with "In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate," as it was the first time she had seen such a thing.
Despite his astonishment, he did not rush to make a decision, but gathered the elders of the people for consultation, as stated in the Holy Quran:
(He said: "O assembly, verily, a noble book has been thrown to me. Verily, it is from Solomon, and verily, it is in the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. Be not haughty against me and come to me in submission.")
The leaders told her:
"We are a people of great strength and power, but the decision is yours, so see what you command!"
If Bilqis had been arrogant or reckless, she would have ordered war, but with her wisdom, she wanted to test God's Prophet, Solomon, to know whether he was an ordinary king or a prophet sent by God.
These:
(Verily, when kings enter a village, they corrupt it and humble the honorable among its people. Thus do they. And verily, I send them with a gift, and I will wait to see what the messengers will bring.)
When the gift reached Solomon, peace be upon him, he said, as stated in the Holy Quran:
(When Solomon came, he said, "Will you help me with wealth? What Allah has given me is better than what He has given you. Rather, it is you who rejoice in your gift. Return to them, and We will come to them with armies that will not be able to resist, and We will drive them out from there in humiliation while they are subdued.")
When Bilqis read this message, he realized that Solomon was a prophet and not an ordinary king, and he decided to go to him personally.
Meanwhile, Solomon wanted to bring his throne before she arrived, so he said:
(He said: "O congregation, which of you will bring me his throne before they come to me in submission?")
Then a jinn said:
"I'll bring it to you before you get up from your seat!"
But a man with knowledge from the Book said:
"I'll bring it to you before your gaze returns to you!"
And indeed, Solomon found the throne before him in the twinkling of an eye! He said:
(This is from the grace of my Lord, to test me whether I give thanks or act in unbelief.)
Then Solomon ordered that the appearance of the throne be changed to test Bilqis' intelligence.
When Bilqis arrived, Solomon, peace be upon him, asked her about the throne, and she said:
(She was asked, "Is this your throne?" She replied, "It is as if it were him.")
Look at his diplomacy! He did not claim it was his throne, nor did he deny it, but he answered intelligently.
Then Solomon invited her to Islam, and she was told:
(Enters the palace.)
And when she saw it, she thought it was water, so she uncovered her legs, and Solomon said to her:
(It is, in truth, a magnificent glass palace.)
At that point, he realized the greatness of Allah and believed, saying:
(My Lord, indeed, I erred and surrendered with Solomon to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.)
Here we observe the pride of Bilqis even when he announced his Islam, as he said:
"I surrendered to Solomon," meaning that she placed herself on the same level as him, which indicates her great intelligence!
This was the great story of Bilqis, in which he demonstrated wisdom, intelligence and unique courage.
