The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has recently established a special working group on cryptocurrency aimed at developing a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets. This working group is led by Acting Chair Mark Uyeda and Commissioner Hester Peirce, marking a significant shift in cryptocurrency policy under the Trump administration.
Previously, the SEC primarily regulated the cryptocurrency industry through enforcement actions, a method that has drawn criticism from the industry for lacking clear regulatory guidance. The newly formed working group aims to clarify regulatory boundaries, provide a realistic path for registration, develop a reasonable disclosure framework, and prudently allocate enforcement resources.
Commissioner Hester Peirce has long advocated for greater regulatory clarity for the cryptocurrency industry. She stated that the working group will collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders, including investors, academics, and industry leaders, to strive for a balance between protecting investors, maintaining market integrity, and promoting innovation.
