The Arabic word for fasting is sawm, which literally means abstinence. In terminology, sawm is said to be the act of every sane, adult Muslim man and woman to abstain from food, drink, sexual intercourse and all acts that break the fast from dawn to sunset with the intention of fasting. Therefore, when the moon of the month of Ramadan rises, it is obligatory for every healthy, resident adult male and adult female who are free from menstruation to fast for the entire month of Ramadan.
