#SECCryptoRoundtable Historic SEC Crypto Roundtable Sparks Intense Regulatory Debate
On Friday, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) held its inaugural crypto roundtable, bringing together both critics and advocates of digital assets. The discussions, at times heated, centered on the challenge of defining whether a crypto asset should be classified as a security.
The landscape for crypto regulation shifted following Donald Trump’s decisive election victory in November, paving the way for a more crypto-friendly administration. During his campaign, Trump had pledged to remove then-SEC Chairman Gary Gensler, a well-known critic of the crypto industry. Anticipating the change, Gensler stepped down in January and has since transitioned to teaching “financial technology” at MIT.
