Bhutan, a small Buddhist kingdom in the Himalayas, has become one of the main global hubs for Bitcoin mining, surpassing El Salvador. With 10,635 bitcoins in reserve, the country holds the fifth-largest national cryptocurrency wallet in the world.
Bhutan's success in cryptocurrency mining is due to the strategic use of hydropower, an abundant source in the country. This allows mining to be renewable and sustainable, boosting the country's digital economy.
Moreover, Bhutan holds the largest cryptocurrency reserve proportional to its population, with more than one-hundredth of a bitcoin per person, equivalent to approximately US$59,200,019,121 per citizen.
Cryptocurrency mining in the country is managed by a state holding company, Druk Holdings, which coordinates investments in the sector. In addition to bitcoin, Bhutan's wallet includes 160 units of ethereum, valued at around US$59,200,019,123,320.
