While everyone is impressed by the Ethereum 'diamond' logo (which we often call the 'Ethereum gem'), its origin is actually more storied than you might think.
💎 The Origin of the Ethereum Logo
• The currently most common Ethereum logo — a diamond-shaped pattern made of four symmetrical triangles (usually gray or black) — is a visual representation created by the community and early contributors.
• The designer is Alex Van de Sande (one of the early members of the Ethereum Foundation), who publicly released this logo design on Reddit and GitHub.
Alex initially aimed to create a more unified brand image with this logo and hoped that it could be freely and widely used.
⚖️ Copyright and Ownership
• The logo is published and managed by the Ethereum Foundation, but it is released under a Creative Commons license, allowing for free use within reasonable limits.
• The foundation has certain trademark control over the Ethereum name and logo to prevent misuse, fraud, and counterfeiting.
• Unlike the Bitcoin logo, while the Ethereum logo can be freely used (especially in non-commercial or community contexts), it may require adherence to licensing conditions or permission for commercial branding, derivative products, and exchange listings.
You can refer to the Ethereum Foundation Brand Assets page for clear usage instructions and downloadable materials.
