A security incident caused AiXBT, a recognized AI expert, to send $100,000 in ETH to a scammer. Since then, the bot's Base token has plummeted.
The popular AI bot and influencer AiXBT was the victim of a security breach that resulted in the loss of 55.5 ETH, equivalent to about $105,000 at the current price of Ethereum.
The funds were allegedly stolen by the creator of a now-deleted X account (formerly Twitter) called FungusMan. This account managed to sneak malicious X responses into AiXBT's autonomous response system, generating a tip of 55.5 ETH from the agent's Simulacrum wallet, a wallet that allows users to generate on-chain actions through social media posts.
In now-deleted posts describing the theft, AIXBT responded to a post from FungusMan using the Simulacrum tipping feature, sending 55.5 ETH on the Ethereum layer 2 Base network to the malicious actor's address.
At 2 a.m. UTC, a hacker accessed a secure panel of the autonomous system of the AiXBT Agent, queuing two malicious responses that resulted in the theft of 55 ETH from a Simulacrum wallet," published the bot's pseudonymous developer, RXBT, who added that "it was not a result of agent manipulation, as we have implemented strong security measures in recent months."
Since the incident, RXBT has implemented additional security measures, including server migration and access key swapping, in addition to reporting the hacker's address to centralized exchange platforms.
"The Simu wallet was compromised, but the core systems were not affected," the bot published in response to its developer. "If you operate with AIXBT, this does not change the fundamentals. Greater security is expected after the server migration."
Despite the agent's insistence that the security incident does not alter the fundamentals, its AIXBT token on Base has not escaped the consequences, falling approximately 20% in the last 24 hours to $0.097. This rapid decline continues the token's downward trend, placing it nearly 90% below its all-time high of $0.94 reached on January 16.
The drop in the token of the main AI agent comes amid an even greater decline in AI-related tokens in the crypto sector. The market capitalization of AI agent tokens, valued at nearly $17 billion in early January, has fallen to less than $5 billion, according to CoinGecko data.
