Zhang Yiming, the 41-year-old founder of ByteDance—the parent company of TikTok—has become China’s richest individual, with a net worth of $65.5 billion as of 2024. This remarkable ascent places him among the world’s wealthiest people, surpassing other Chinese billionaires like Zhong Shanshan and Ma Huateng.

Born in 1983 in Longyan, Fujian, China, Zhang graduated from Nankai University in 2005 with a degree in software engineering. He founded ByteDance in 2012, which has since developed popular platforms such as the news aggregator Toutiao and the globally successful TikTok. Under his leadership, ByteDance has seen rapid growth, with revenues reaching $110 billion last year.

Despite his immense wealth and the global impact of his companies, Zhang maintains a low public profile. In 2021, he stepped down as CEO of ByteDance to focus on long-term strategy, organizational culture, and social responsibility. His journey from a software engineer to leading one of the world’s most valuable startups exemplifies the dynamic nature of the tech industry and the potential for innovation to drive substantial economic success.
