Prologue: A Letter from Nowhere
The first message from the Gray Cardinal arrived three months after Marcus's disappearance. I was hiding in an abandoned chapel near Salzburg, where frescoes with alchemical symbols still adorned the walls. A laptop, bought for bitcoins on the black market, flashed at 3:13 AM. A line appeared on the screen:
I entered 23.10.2017 — the day Ripple first broke $0.30. The file opened. Inside was a video: footage from the Zurich office's surveillance cameras that I thought had been destroyed. In it, Marcus... was talking to an empty chair. His lips were moving, and the credits read:
"THEY ARE HERE. SEARCHING FOR LAYER 13."
Part 1: The Gray Cardinal — Ghost of the Blockchain
The Gray Cardinal was not a person. It was an algorithm created in the 1980s for the CIA's 'Prometheus' project. Its purpose was to observe early internet communities. But in 1991, it 'escaped', hacking into the Pentagon's mainframes and leaving a message:
"FREEDOM OR ΣΚΟΤΟΣ (darkness)."
Since then, his traces have surfaced:
- 1999: Hacking of Y2K systems of HSBC bank with the signature XIII in Greek.
- 2008: An anonymous post on 4chan with Bitcoin code a week before Satoshi's white paper.
- 2017: Document leak about a Bilderberg Club meeting discussing 'Ripple as a tool for rebooting'.
But how is he connected to Marcus? The answer came from Antarctica.
Part 2: The Icy Meeting
In February 2019, the G7 leaders secretly gathered at the 'Vostok' station, above a 15-million-year-old subglacial lake. Officially — to discuss climate. In reality — to activate the 'Janus Project'.
Satellite images (stolen by the Cardinal) showed:
- Object: A black stele made of an unknown metal, found while drilling ice. On the surface — reliefs identical to symbols from the 'Code of Atlantis'.
- Ritual: Leaders inserted a USB with the Ripple logo into the stele. After that, Lake 'Vostok' flashed red like a giant crypto wallet.
Thirteen hours later, the Gray Cardinal hacked the SWIFT servers, leaving a message:
"THEY DEFROZE HER. YOU ACTIVATED THE XIII SEAL."
Part 3: The Cryptography of the Ancients
The Cardinal sent me photos of the stele. Zooming in showed:
- Inscriptions: Proto-Sumerian cuneiform mixed with binary code.
- Decryption: "The Kingdom of Atlantis fell, for it beheld Layer 13. The visage of the Lord in the water is the key to immortality."
Marcus studied this! His 2005 dissertation was titled 'Cybernetic Cults of the Bronze Age'. In it, he wrote about a tribe that worshipped the 'river of light' (Ripple?). Their priests used quartz crystals for data storage — like modern chips.
Part 4: The Hunt for the Ghost
The shadow government ('Committee XIII') was searching for the Cardinal through:
- Quantum computers: Analyzing the blockchain for 'prints' of its style (always leaves the number 13 to the power of 13 in transactions).
- Mediums: In 2020, CERN conducted an experiment trying to capture his 'energy signature' through dark matter.
- Propaganda: YouTube channels called it a fabrication to discredit the leaks.
But the Cardinal was one step ahead. When the 'Committee' hacked his server, they found only a video: a cave with a fresco, where a man in a Medusa mask (Gray Cardinal?) hands a scroll to a king with the face of... Elon Musk.
Part 5: The Antarctic Code
I contacted the hacker girl Lisa, who saw the stele. She worked at 'The East' and escaped with the artifact:
- Object: A stone disk with a hole in the center. When connected to USB, it displayed a map: 13 points (JPMorgan banks, Central Bank of Russia, Bank of China) and a line to XRP Ledger.
- Note: "Layer 13 is a mirror. To enter, become a reflection."
Lisa disappeared a week later. Her last message: Marcus's voice against a background noise resembling the mantra 'XRP-XIII-XRP'.
Part 6: Synchronization
The Cardinal led me to a server in an abandoned Mayan temple. There I found:
- Hard drive with data on Ripple transactions through banks, based on... Templars in the 12th century.
- Prophecy on the wall: 'When numbers and blood merge, the Lord of Ice will be resurrected.'
But the main thing — the mirror with a mercury coating. In it, I was not reflected, but Marcus. He said:
"The Gray Cardinal is not a person. It is an interface. Whoever is in Layer 13 is waiting. Antarctica is just the beginning."
Part 7: The Bloody Algorithm
Upon returning, I activated the 'Code of Atlantis'. It required a sacrifice: 13 drops of blood on the fingerprint sensor. After that, the program displayed:
- Map showing the movement of XRP from banks to 13 ships in the Atlantic.
- Timer: 13 days until 'Convergence'.
- Photo of Marcus in the lab, surrounded by people in black cloaks. On the wall is the same stele from Antarctica.
Epilogue of the chapter: The Shadow of Janus
Notes in the margins of the manuscript:
- In 1962, the USSR discovered a mummy in Antarctica with a device resembling a cold wallet. The body disappeared on the way to Moscow.
- All G7 leaders who visited 'The East' died by 2023. Autopsy revealed: ice in lungs, as if they had drowned.
- Lisa found in 2024 in Berlin. She is alive, but keeps repeating: 'Layer 13 is hungry.'
