It is said that, in a town in the interior, a group of people amused themselves with the village fool, a poor unfortunate, of little intelligence, who spent his days running small errands and begging.
Daily, some men would call the fool to the bar where they gathered and offered him a choice between two coins: one large coin worth 400 reales and another smaller one, but worth 2000 reales.
He always picked the larger and less valuable one, which was a source of laughter for everyone.
One day, someone who was watching the group have fun with the innocent man called him aside and asked if he still hadn't realized that the larger coin was worth less, and he replied: I know, I'm not that foolish. It is worth five times less, but the day I choose the other one, the little game ends and I won’t earn my coin anymore.
This story could end here, as a simple joke, but several conclusions can be drawn:
The first: Who seems foolish is not always so.
The second: Who were the real fools in the story?
The third: An excessive ambition can end up cutting off your source of income.
But the most interesting conclusion is:
#1. We can be okay, even when others do not hold a good opinion of us.
#2. Therefore, what matters is not what they think of us, but what we think of ourselves.
#3. The truly intelligent man is the one who pretends to be foolish in front of a fool who pretends to be intelligent.
