Trump Sets New Record in Congress.
President of the United States (US) Donald Trump delivered the longest speech ever given by any US president in a congressional session on Tuesday (4/3) local time. Trump’s speech set a new record for the longest speech, surpassing the previous record held by former President Bill Clinton.
Trump, as reported by AFP and Associated Press on Wednesday (5/3/2025), delivered a speech discussing various issues lasting over 1 hour and 40 minutes in front of members of the US Congress from both the Republican and Democratic parties.
CBS News reported that the duration included pauses for applause and other reactions.
Trump’s speech surpassed Clinton’s record, who delivered the State of the Union address lasting 1 hour and 28 minutes in 2000, or 25 years ago.
This data is based on the American Presidency Project at the University of California, Santa Barbara, which has recorded the duration of US presidential speeches since the era of President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964.
Trump’s speech this week is technically not a State of the Union address because he has only been in office again for six weeks. However, the duration of his speech broke the record for the longest speech ever delivered in a joint session of the US Congress.
This joint session speech is the first speech Trump has delivered since returning to the White House in mid-January.
