What is a payment system and why is Trustee Plus not one?
A payment system is a complex infrastructure that provides the transfer of funds between banks and users. This includes Visa, Mastercard, SWIFT, SEPA — they manage clearing, transactions, settlements, are regulated by central banks, and operate in a legal framework where each operation undergoes strict control.
Trustee Plus does not have a payment system license (PSD2), does not manage settlements between banks, does not participate in clearing, and is not subject to strict EU financial regulations. It is merely an electronic wallet operator that stores users' virtual assets and issues cards using someone else's infrastructure.
Why is Trustee Plus a questionable story?
1. Lack of PSD2 license
Trustee Plus (UAB "Trustee Global") is not registered as a payment institution and does not have the right to provide financial services outside of virtual asset operations. They cannot directly transfer funds between banks, but only act as an intermediary.
2. No banking supervision
Unlike real payment systems and financial institutions, Trustee Plus is not regulated by the Bank of Lithuania or the European Central Bank. This means that the mechanisms for protecting client funds are weaker than those of traditional banks and licensed payment operators.
3. Lack of transparency and independent audits
No public reports confirming the financial stability of Trustee Plus. Unlike serious players, they do not provide independent audits or reports on the protection of client funds.
4. Risks of fund storage
Users' money in Trustee Plus accounts is not legally a bank deposit, which means there are no guarantees of recovery in case of problems with the company.
Proven alternatives
If you need a real payment system or a wallet with a license, there are several proven options:
Revolut (EMI license and banking license in Lithuania)
Wise (EMI license, works with real bank accounts)
PayPal (license for electronic money operations in the EU)
N26 (full-fledged digital bank with a license in the EU)
These services undergo regular audits, are regulated by central banks, have transparent reports, and provide legal protection for clients.
Trustee Plus, however, is just a gray wallet that tries to look like a payment system but lacks any legal or financial basis for this.
