Italian Prime Minister [Giorgia Meloni](w) held a phone call last night with U.S. President [Donald J. Trump](w), ahead of his scheduled meeting in London today with Ukrainian President [Volodymyr Zelensky](w). The call was confirmed by [Palazzo Chigi](w), following a tense exchange between Trump and Zelensky in the [Oval Office](w).
Today, Meloni is in London for a summit on Ukraine’s and Europe’s security, hosted by British Prime Minister [Keir Starmer](w). At the meeting with European leaders, she will propose a U.S.-EU summit to strengthen Western unity.
“The West must not be divided,” Meloni emphasized after the heated Trump-Zelensky meeting. “Every division weakens us and benefits those who want to see the decline of our civilization—not just its power or influence, but the very principles that founded it, above all, freedom.”
She reiterated that fragmentation serves no one’s interests: “We urgently need a summit between the United States, European nations, and our allies to have an open discussion on how to face today’s major challenges—starting with Ukraine, which we have defended together in recent years, and those we will face in the future. This is the proposal Italy will present to its partners in the coming hours.”
