China has vowed to retaliate against the United States after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Saturday (1st) imposing an additional 10% tariff on imports from the world's second-largest economy.#GoogleDocsMagic
In a statement released on Sunday (2), China's Commerce Ministry promised to file a "complaint" against the US at the World Trade Organization (WTO), condemning the blanket tariff as a "serious violation" of international trade rules. Beijing said it "will take corresponding countermeasures to firmly defend its own rights and interests", without going into details.
Trump launched the opening salvo in his trade war on Saturday. In addition to the 10% tariff on key Chinese goods, he imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, citing a failure to stem the flow of undocumented migrants and illegal drugs. The move, just two weeks into his second term, shows that the U.S. leader is serious about following through on his promises of trade restrictions against both adversaries and his own allies.
“The practice of imposing tariffs is not constructive and will inevitably undermine future cooperation between the two sides in drug control,” China’s Foreign Ministry said in a separate statement.
