Big news for gaming in China!
China has approved 136 new games in January, including Tencent’s Honor of Kings: World—an open-world action RPG spin-off of Honor of Kings.
(This is the first batch of licensed games for 2025, according to the South China Morning Post.)
A quick breakdown:
✅ 123 domestic titles
✅ 13 foreign games, including Frostpunk: Beyond the Ice (a mobile adaptation of the PC game, to be operated by NetEase).
Why this matters:
Over 1,400 games were approved in 2024—the most since 2019.
And January 2025 is already breaking records for monthly domestic approvals.
This comes as China’s gaming market steadily recovers after regulatory controls eased, following an 8-month freeze on new approvals in 2021.
