Secondly, they have a new president. Trump defeated his competitor in the elections by a narrow margin. The results were 49.91% and 48.43%. Half of the voters did not want to see Trump as president - it's clear that now they are feeling pessimistic.
Consumer confidence index is also known as the consumer optimism index for a reason. It measures how buyers perceive the present time as suitable for major purchases/investments.
