Marbella, Spain – January 25, 2025
The Marbella National Police have arrested a man accused of carrying out a cryptocurrency scam of more than one million euros, deceiving five Swedish investors. The suspect, who falsely presented himself as a doctor and an authorized crypto manager, promised high returns and safe operations in digital assets.
According to authorities, the scheme began about a year ago when the accused gained the trust of his victims through exclusive events and social media, flaunting a luxurious lifestyle and demonstrating convincing technical knowledge about blockchain investments. However, after investors made substantial deposits, he would disappear with the funds, offering excuses for delays in the alleged returns.
The investigation was launched following a complaint from one of the victims, who suspected inconsistencies in the information provided by the fraudster. With the collaboration of Interpol, the police were able to trace transactions in digital wallets associated with the suspect, leading to his arrest at a luxury residence in Marbella.
“This case serves as a warning to investors seeking high returns on digital assets. It is essential to verify the credentials and authenticity of managers before carrying out any transaction,” said a spokesperson for the National Police.
The suspect will be charged with financial fraud, false information and money laundering. Authorities are still investigating whether there are other victims involved in the scheme.
Meanwhile, regulators reiterate the importance of raising awareness about cryptocurrency scams, highlighting that the growth of the market has attracted criminals specialized in social engineering and financial manipulation.
