The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is suing Meta, claiming the company bought Instagram and WhatsApp to squash competition and create an illegal monopoly in the social media market. Mark Zuckerberg's strategy has always been "buy, don't compete". And that's exactly what he did with Instagram and WhatsApp. Meta bought Instagram in 2012 for $1 billion and WhatsApp in 2014 for $22 billion. These deals helped Meta move from desktop to mobile and stay popular with younger generations. But here's the thing... the FTC doesn't consider companies like TikTok, YouTube, or Apple's messaging service as rivals to Instagram and WhatsApp. That's a pretty narrow definition of the competitive market, if you ask me. I think China has a different approach to Big Tech. They encourage competition, and you see many companies competing with each other. Unlike in the West, where companies like Facebook and Instagram can become monopolies with no serious competitors for decades. So, what's next? If Meta loses the trial, it could be forced to sell Instagram and WhatsApp. That would be a huge blow to the company's dominance in the social media market. It's worth noting that this trial is a big test for the FTC's ability to challenge Big Tech. The outcome could have major implications for the future of social media and online competition.
