Xiamen SuanNeng Technology (Sophgo) has recently been reported to be a facilitator for Huawei in obtaining TSMC chips. Reuters cited sources reporting that the U.S. government plans to place it on the Department of Commerce's Entity List, further tightening export restrictions on China's high-tech sector.
Reuters cited sources reporting that SuanNeng Technology is a subsidiary of Bitcoin mining equipment supplier Bitmain. In October of this year, TSMC discovered that a chip produced for it was used in Huawei's Ascend 910 artificial intelligence chip, actively alerting the U.S. Department of Commerce and ceasing supply to SuanNeng Technology. This incident has drawn widespread attention to SuanNeng Technology and raised questions about how the U.S. will respond.
Sources told Reuters that the U.S. government is taking steps to include SuanNeng Technology on the Department of Commerce's Entity List, making it the latest Chinese company to face U.S. penalties for assisting Huawei. Huawei was placed on the Entity List by the U.S. government in 2019, and since 2020, it has been illegal to sell or ship chips to Huawei without a license, including chips produced by foreign companies using U.S. equipment and technology. TSMC has not supplied any chips to Huawei since then. What are everyone's thoughts?
