**Diplomatic and Economic Crisis between Carrefour and Brazil**
Recently, Carrefour announced that it would stop buying meat from Mercosur, an economic bloc that includes Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. The decision was announced by the chain's global CEO, Alexandre Bompard, and justified as a measure to meet pressure from French unions and environmental concerns imposed by the European Union.
The reaction in Brazil was immediate. Large Brazilian meatpackers, such as Marfrig, JBS, Masterboi and Minerva, which represent 80% of Carrefour Brazil's meat supply, suspended their meat supply to the chain. This move had a direct impact on the retail chain's market in Brazil and pressured the CEO to issue a letter of retraction.
In the letter, released on November 26, Bompard apologized if Carrefour France's communication had caused confusion or been interpreted as a questioning of the partnership with Brazilian agriculture. Despite the retraction, Carrefour maintained its decision to prioritize the purchase of meat from French producers.
Experts believe that the episode could evolve into a broader diplomatic crisis, affecting trade relations between Brazil and France. Economist Hugo Garbe described the episode as "a serious disruption to trade relations".
