The white paper was released shortly after Polygon Labs and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin revealed a new cross-chain interoperability solution.

1inch Network has released a new white paper aimed at addressing the urgent challenges of cross-chain interoperability in the cryptocurrency space.
As part of its solution, the decentralized finance platform is developing an 'intent-based atomic cross-chain exchange protocol,' a hybrid solution that combines the security of traditional atomic swaps with the simplicity of intent-based approaches.
1inch co-founder Anton Bukov stated that the main advantage of the exchange protocol is combining a frictionless user experience with cutting-edge technology.
Bukov told Cointelegraph:
“These technologies are built on three key principles: complete trustlessness, providing protocol scalability without a centralized authority, and leveraging Dutch auctions and parser competition to ensure optimal execution.”

The new exchange protocol will enable seamless cross-chain exchanges, whether tokens are on Layer 1 (L1) or Layer 2 (L2) blockchain networks, effectively 'eliminating network boundaries,' Bukov added:
“Looking ahead, the parser can and will utilize its services through other centralized bridges, creating an aggregation of cross-chain liquidity, further enhancing the DeFi ecosystem.”
This white paper is released against the backdrop of growing interest in cross-chain interoperability solutions. In early August, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced plans to address cross-chain interoperability between Ethereum L2s.
Cross-chain interoperability is the biggest challenge in blockchain
Blockchain interoperability is one of the industry's most pressing issues.
Because L1 blockchains are isolated systems, they cannot communicate with each other, which is why cross-chain interoperability solutions exist.
The lack of compatibility between blockchains has made it difficult to develop cross-chain infrastructure, leading to vulnerabilities in these third-party protocols.
1inch Network is the largest decentralized exchange (DEX) aggregator on Ethereum, with a total trading volume exceeding $500 billion. According to Dune Analytics data, the platform has also raised a total of $189 million in funding.

Cross-chain solutions are fragile: Vitalik Buterin
The white paper was released two years after Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin first warned about the centralization issues of cross-chain bridges.
In a Reddit post from January 2022, Buterin shared his concerns that future cross-chain bridge 51% attacks will become more common:
“The more cross-chain bridges and applications are used, the worse the problem becomes. No one would launch a 51% attack on Ethereum to steal 100 Solana-WETH... but if there are 10 million ETH or SOL in the bridge, the motivation to initiate an attack becomes much higher, and large mining pools could coordinate with each other to carry out the attack.”
Others envision a future in the blockchain space without bridges. For instance, Polygon is building interoperability through its AggLayer, which stands for Aggregation Layer, similar to cross-chain interoperability protocols designed to connect blockchain networks.
Marc Boiron, CEO of Polygon Labs, stated that AggLayer's ultimate goal is to connect all blockchain spaces, including Layer 1 networks like Ethereum and Solana.
