Telegram CEO Pavel Durov said changes have been made to prevent crime from running rampant on the messaging app.
According to an announcement posted on his personal Telegram channel on the evening of September 23, CEO Pavel Durov of the popular messaging app Telegram announced that he has updated his Terms of Use and Privacy Policy to better prevent crime.
Mr. Durov admitted that Telegram is being exploited by many bad elements to buy and sell illegal goods, using the search function and groups created here. Telegram has recently increased censorship to purge accounts and information channels suspected of aiding criminal activities and illegal drug trafficking.
"🔎 Search on Telegram is more powerful than other messaging apps because it allows users to find public channels and bots. Unfortunately, this feature has been abused by people who violate our Terms of Service to sell illegal goods.
💪 Over the past few weeks, a dedicated moderation team, leveraging AI, has made Telegram Search much safer. All problematic content we identified in Search is no longer accessible. If you still find something unsafe or illegal in Telegram Search, please report it to us via @SearchReport.
🚫 To prevent criminals from abusing Telegram Search, we have updated our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy to ensure they are consistent across the globe. We have clarified that the IP addresses and phone numbers of those who violate our rules may be disclosed to authorities in response to valid legal requests.
☝️ These measures will deter criminals. Telegram Search is intended to be used to find friends and discover news, not to promote illegal goods. We will not let bad actors jeopardize the integrity of our platform for nearly a billion users."
