Polygon co-founder Jaynti Kanani announced that he is stepping down from “day-to-day work” on the project for the first time in six years.

In an Oct. 4 post on X (formerly Twitter), Kanani said he plans to focus on “new adventures” while contributing to Polygon “from the sidelines.” He helped create the Matic Network, later renamed Polygon, in 2017 along with software engineers including Sandeep Nailwal, Anurag Arjun and Mihailo Bjelic.

“Man, this makes me emotional,” Nailwal said in response to the announcement. “Brother, what a journey we’ve had together. But this is just the beginning of Polygon, and I hope we can do a lot more together on this crazy Polygon journey. But hey, you gotta do what you gotta do.”

After launching Polygon in 2017, I decided to step back from my day job about 6 months ago. I have more faith in Polygon's bright future and passionate community. I will focus on new adventures while still cheering on and contributing to Polygon...

Polygon’s website lists 10 co-founders of the protocol, some of whom are still involved in various side projects on the platform. Arjun left Polygon in March to spin off blockchain data availability protocol Avail.

Since announcing the plan in June, Polygon Labs has begun accepting improvement proposals aimed at transitioning the network to Polygon 2.0. The new ecosystem will use zero-knowledge proofs and consist of four protocol layers focused on staking, interoperability, execution, and attestation. At the time of posting, developers were still working on "bringing Polygon 2.0 to life."
