Malaysian authorities recently successfully arrested seven individuals suspected of being involved in illegal Bitcoin mining, including three local residents and four foreigners. The suspects were accused of stealing electricity to support their Bitcoin mining operations. During the operation, the police seized 52 Bitcoin mining equipment and other electronic equipment with a total value of approximately RM250,000 (approximately US$57,000).

The arrest is part of the Malaysian government's extensive crackdown on illegal Bitcoin mining activities. In recent years, illegal mining activities in Malaysia have surged, especially after China banned cryptocurrency mining in 2021, and a large number of miners moved their operations to Malaysia, where electricity prices are lower and infrastructure is well-developed. The Deputy Minister of Malaysia's Ministry of Energy reported that illegal miners have stolen up to RM3.4 billion (approximately US$777 million) worth of electricity since 2018, seriously affecting the country's energy security.

This incident reflects the huge consumption of electricity resources by illegal Bitcoin mining activities and the challenges faced by governments in dealing with this problem. The Malaysian government is stepping up its crackdown to curb this illegal behavior and protect the country's electricity resources.
