The largest institutional holder of Bitcoin today is the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), which manages over 558,000 BTC (about 2.7% of all Bitcoin supply). MicroStrategy comes next with about 423,650 BTC (as of mid-2025). Strategies Used to Stack Up BTC 1. Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC): Built its BTC reserves through continuous investor inflows into the trust. Instead of buying Bitcoin once, GBTC has consistently purchased BTC in large volumes over the years, proportional to demand from accredited investors. Operates much like an ETF, though for years it traded at a premium/discount due to restrictions on redemptions. ✓Strategy: Institutional custodial aggregation → Grayscale acts as a custodian and keeps acquiring BTC on behalf of investors who don’t want direct custody. ✓Goal: Provide regulated exposure to Bitcoin for hedge funds, family offices, and large investors. 2. MicroStrategy: Began in August 2020, when Michael Saylor announced BTC would become its primary treasury reserve asset. Uses a Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA)-like approach, consistently buying BTC during dips and rallies. Financed purchases through corporate debt issuance, convertible bonds, equity sales, and retained earnings. ✓Strategy: Corporate Treasury Strategy → stacking BTC as a store of value instead of holding cash reserves. ✓Goal: Hedge against inflation and establish a long-term corporate Bitcoin standard. 3. Other Institutional Holders: ✓Tesla (initially bought 48,000 BTC in 2021, later sold part). ✓Block (Square), Galaxy Digital, and Marathon Digital Holdings mine or accumulate BTC as part of their core operations. Their strategies are a mix of treasury reserve holding (Tesla, Block) and mining accumulation (Marathon, Hut 8). Summary Largest institutional holder: ✓Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) with ~558,000 BTC. 📌By Iyusufah 📌 #BitgetInsight #CryptoTrivia $BTC $ETH $SOL
