Daily Hack Attacks on Almost 500 MetaMask Users on the Rise: Chainalysis Reports

In 2025, over $2.17 billion has been lost in cryptocurrency theft, surpassing 2024's total, largely due to a $1.5 billion hack on Bybit by DPRK. Chainalysis reports that daily attacks on MetaMask users have increased, affecting up to 500 users a day. This rise in thefts from direct wallet-targeting campaigns, especially MetaMask, started in late 2024 and continued into 2025. The surge could be due to potential software vulnerabilities, compromised third-party infrastructure, or an increase in crypto adoption.

A worrying trend is the rise of "wrench attacks" where criminals physically force individuals to hand over their crypto holdings. The number of these attacks in 2025 is set to double any previous year's total. A link has been observed between these violent attacks and bitcoin's price, indicating increasing asset values may lead to more attacks on crypto holders.
