Metaplanet Acquires an Additional 797 BTC in Intense Bitcoin Acquisition Spree
Japanese firm Metaplanet has bolstered its Bitcoin holdings with the purchase of 797 BTC, costing around $93 million. The latest acquisition brings the company's total BTC holdings to 16,352, valued at roughly $1.64 billion, positioning it as the world’s fifth-largest publicly traded corporate BTC holder. The firm has pivoted from hotel operations to Bitcoin treasury management, and is increasing its accumulation efforts due to growing institutional interest in cryptocurrency.
Metaplanet aims to control over 210,000 BTC or 1% of the total Bitcoin supply by 2027. The company plans to use its Bitcoin reserves as collateral to acquire cash-generating businesses, possibly including a digital bank in Japan. Metaplanet’s future plans also include using Bitcoin-backed leverage to offer superior retail banking options in Japan.
