🚨🚨🚨ONE YEAR ON: Lessons from Crypto’s Largest Liquidation Event:
Exactly one year ago, on October 10, 2025, the cryptocurrency market experienced its most significant liquidation event on record.
In under 24 hours, approximately $19 billion in leveraged positions were force-closed, affecting more than 1.6 million traders. Roughly 87% of these liquidations were long positions. Bitcoin declined from around $122,000 toward the $106,000 range, while many altcoins suffered steeper losses of 30–60% or more. Perpetual futures open interest contracted by approximately 43%.
The catalyst was a sudden macroeconomic shock: U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of potential 100% tariffs on Chinese imports. The news triggered risk-off selling across global markets. Because crypto trades continuously and without traditional circuit breakers, the pressure intensified during a period of already thin liquidity, rapidly escalating into a cascading liquidation spiral.
Contributing factors included elevated market-wide leverage, crowded long positioning, and reduced order-book depth. On certain platforms, secondary issues; such as temporary pricing dislocations for assets used as collateral (including USDe on Binance)—amplified liquidations for some users. Binance later provided compensation to affected accounts.
It is important to note that the widely cited $19 billion figure refers to the notional value of positions closed, not the actual capital lost by traders. Real equity losses were substantially lower, estimated in the range of $1–3 billion.
The event served as a forceful deleveraging of the market. Excess speculation was flushed, open interest reset, and the system emerged with a cleaner foundation. One year later, the episode remains a clear reminder of the risks inherent in high leverage and the speed at which cascading liquidations can unfold during periods of stress.
Markets recover. Risk management remains essential.
